Green & Red Ghatchola Banarasi Silk Mirror Work Saree

£130.00

Heritage craftsmanship, intricately detailed — a ghatchola-style Banarasi silk saree in deep bottle green, divided into a diagonal lattice of fine gold zari lines with a small woven motif inside each diamond. The pallu and the wide border are contrast deep red, densely brocaded with gold zari florals and paisleys, and small round mirrors stitched in green are set at intervals along the border. The outer edge is finished with a scalloped mirror-and-pearl trim.

Green and red is the traditional Gujarati and Rajasthani wedding pairing, and ghatchola — the grid of zari squares — is the weave that goes with it. This is a saree for the ceremony rather than the reception: heavy enough to hold its drape, with the mirrors catching light as you move. It comes with a matching blouse piece.
